is a nationally recognized program throughout the US.

In collaboration with their teachers, TDI certified handler/dog teams come to school once/week, set up a cozy nest of blankets and pillows in their reading area and children come to visit their dog, book in hand for a 15 minute reading time.

Children are chosen to read to a dog by their teacher to enhance reading skills, to reward good attitude and to increase reading confidence among other reasons.

Handlers and Teachers email about techniques, strategies and individual needs of each child in a team approach.

Does it work? According to teachers and principals they have  seen progress in decoding, fluency and most of all, confidence.

Farmdog "Frisco" brings joy to both young and old...

The residents and staff of Assisted Living and Skilled Care homes look forward to the therapy dogs and their owners visiting every month. The residents LOVE "dog day".

The dogs bring  smiles to the residents faces and are talked about days after they leave. The dogs get some of the residents talking about their dogs they had. There is a special kind of warmth and happiness in the room when the dogs come.

Warren's Story:  Testimonial to the work DSFUSA is doing

I am the owner of a Danish/Swedish Farmdog, and we  keep busy doing many things, but one of our favorites is Therapy dog work.  We go to hospitals, schools, nursing homes etc on a regular basis.  Most places require that any visiting dogs be certified, in case of any  incidents would occur while visiting.  In Sioux Falls the largest and most active group is sanctioned by Therapy Dogs International.  Frisco became certified in late 2007, and his registration always referred to him as a Danish/Swedish Farmdog.  Sometime during 2011 our sanctioning  body (TDI)  made the decision to  change any listing that did not have an AKC registration to a mixed breed.

I contacted TDI and explained to the gentleman that a Danish/Swedish Farmdog was indeed a purebred dog and I requested that  Frisco’s status be corrected. I asked him if TDI would accept the AKC-FSS certification as an approved purebred dog listing.  His response was that yes, FSS certification is an acceptable AKC listing.

This gentleman informed me that Danish/Swedish Farmdogs will now be listed as in their records, and the correction will be made for Frisco.

The Danish/Swedish farmdog was only recently been granted AKC-FSS status. This was only made possible because as the DSFUSA formed in September of 2010 one of its first items of business was to submit application for several dogs to be accepted into the AKC-FSS registry. AKC notified DSFUSA that the Danish/Swedish Farmdog met the criteria to be  recognized as a purebred breed in January of 2011.

Because of the efforts of the DSFUSA to submit all the necessary documentation needed  the Danish/Swedish Farmdog is recognized as the purebred breed it is. Doors that were previously closed for the DSF to participate in have opened, all due to the DSFUSA taking the time and effort to have this great breed recognized.  THANKS DSFUSA
