                                        Kennels:  Looking for a Puppy?

                                        Picture

The US breeding program is in it's infancy, averaging fewer than 10-15 litters per year.
There are currently only a few breeders in the United States, and most produce only a few litters with each breeding female over their entire breeding career.  First and foremost, our Farmdogs are part of our family and the health and well-being of our dogs is our primary concern.

The Danish-Swedish Farmdog is considered a rare breed.  Due to the rarity of the breed, and the limited gene pool, it can only be bred responsibly if done slowly and selectively.  Breeding too many litters within a short time frame utilizing the same foundation stock could eventually lead to severe inbreeding. Kennels affiliated with DSFUSA are committed to preserving the integrity of the breed and do not produce puppies to meet demand.

Procedures for obtaining a Farmdog puppy vary from breeder to breeder, and agreements between puppy seekers and a breeders are individual. Keep in mind, breeders want to place puppies in homes where both the puppy and the family are a good match for each other. The best way to ensure you get the right puppy for your family is to communicate with the breeder openly and honestly what your expectations are.  Remember, this is a long-term commitment.

Danish-Swedish Farmdogs USA supports a "DSFUSA Puppies Yahoo Group" forum to facilitate information exchange between puppy seekers, Farmdog owners and Farmdog breeders, both US and abroad.  The objectives of this group are to: (1) educate puppy seekers about the breed; (2) help puppy seekers meet breeders implementing best practices;  (3) help breeders ensure good matches between puppies and puppy buyers; (4) facilitate importation of quality puppies from abroad.   If you are interested in participating in the forum, please visit the "Become a Member!" page of this website, complete the free membership application indicating you would like to participate in the DSFUSA interactive puppy group.

Puppy agreements are between the breeder and the puppy buyer, and each agreement is individual because no two puppies are exactly the same.  Some things you may expect in a puppy agreement include health and breeding considerations.  Most breeders will ask that the puppy be kept intact to maturity, even dogs destined to be spayed or neutered.  There are important health considerations associated with this request that your breeder will explain.  Also, most breeders retain the right to re-evaluate the puppy when it reaches maturity to determine their potential for breeding.  Families interested in a potential breeding quality Farmdog should share this desire with the breeder early in the process to help with initial puppy selection.

A reputable breeder will have many questions to ask a potential puppy buyer, and in turn, there are questions every puppy buyer should also ask of a breeder.  The AKC offers good advice to puppy seekers on their website.

It takes patience and perseverance to bring one of these little dogs into your home.  If you are sincerely interested in pursuing this endeavor, please let us get to know you by becoming a member of DSFUSA and our interactive puppy forum.
